Leo and Jason

This is from an idea i had to do celebrities as Happy Pantry characters.  The idea was turned down so hard by Tracey that I never did more than this.  I think of it as one of my finest illustrations ever.  And....one of the worst.

These have absolutely nothing to do with each other - but I wanted to post them.  So here they are.

Jason Bourne or Jason reborn...

I've done a couple of versions of Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th.  The first time was back in 2009 for a gallery show and the second was earlier this month to celebrate the second month in a row that had a Friday the 13th in it.

And I thought I got it out of my system when I suddenly thought, "Jason Born."  I thought it was interesting enough that I wanted to draw it.

This might just be the cutest of all Jasons.

Friday the 13th, starring Lil' Jason Voorhees

Does it happen often that there's two Friday the 13ths in consecutive months?  I haven't heard of it.  I also don't usually care about it...or pay attention.

Usually I might register a "don't step on a crack," but even that I don't think very seriously.  It's a bogus day with no meaning - not unlike Valentines Day.  Only nobody feels like they need to buy anyone a gift.  Sometimes it might be worth seeing a Friday the 13th movie...but even that feels more like a Halloween thing.

So with that said, I illustrated a Jason as part of a gallery show I did back in 2009:
Adorable lil' Jason Voorhees

And today, to celebrate Friday, March 13th, 2015 - I drew this Jason:

He turned out a little more sinister than I originally planned.  But that's the difference between my 2009 and 2015 style.  I still like cleaning up most of my drawings in Adobe Illustrator, but sometimes (like in this recent Jason piece) I'll just do the cleanup with a proprietary brush in Photoshop.

Happy Friday the 13th.  Don't step on a crack.

IF: Idle

lil' bloody Jason Voorhees

This works a couple of ways. Jason just sits idlely around waiting for kids to stumble into the creepy campsite...and then he kills them. Secondly - Jason has been around so long and even though his movies are hard to take serious, he's a horror icon/idol. And sure it's the wrong spelling of Illustration Friday's topic (idle), but the second sentence of this paragraph explains all.

This is one of the pieces I had in my Nickelodeon Animation Studio art gallery show. I previously posted that picture earlier this year (when I did it) but I had a couple of people interested in this print - I had done a 'clean' version of this picture (which I was inspired by the old mcfarlane toys...where they'd sell a clean and regular version of a movie monster...basically it means with or without blood.). The clean version was for the studio...I knew that Nickelodeon doesn't let you put up images of guns and violence...I don't think they would have protested too much about this illustration, but just to be sure I had my 'innocent' version for the gallery.

I thought the people interested in this print would get a kick out of the bloody version, and when I showed it to them on my computer, I had two sales! I thought I'd take the piece a little bit further and bloody up the machete as well.

Illustration Friday: Pretend

This is for the 11/14/08 Illustration Friday topic: Pretend.

It seems appropriate, seeing as how Halloween just slipped by (all sly like). Of course, it might have been more appropriate on the actual halloween weekend, but it's close enough. Pretend obviously will mean different things to different people - but the first thing that came to my mind was halloween costumes. I've always wanted to dress up as Freddy Krueger or Jason from Friday the 13th (that movie where they battled was pretty awesome for a horrible horror movie)...so this halloween I was doing these drawings where I took a movie or entertainment icon and drew it as a stuffed animal or small child (depending on the subject matter)...and it was appropriate to do horror icons during the month of October.

I should put these two in a drawing together....maybe next halloween.

lil' Jason

Photobucket

The latest in my line of media icons comes from Friday the 13th. I did several drawings of movie villians and this one was the strongest. I'll have more in the coming weeks - but I believe this one will be my favorite. I had a lot of fun drawing Jason in this style, and a tough time texturing the color...but I think the struggle made it all the better. And it ended up being quite a strong painting.

I did two different versions of his mask - one with a lot of red...sort of a gory version and a 'clean' verson.

Anyhow - I love this series of illustrations. I want to do something with them...
